5 Ways to Celebrate Dhanteras

Diwali festivities are in fast mode with Dhanteras, which is always just two days before Diwali and the day when homes are lit up to welcome the goddess of wealth, Mahalaxmi. But what exactly is the importance of Dhanteras and how do we really celebrate it? We tell you 5 ways to celebrate Dhanteras
  1. It’s a great story to tell your kids: Well, Dhanteras is the day when death was trumped by a feisty princess. It’s said that a newlywed prince was foretold of his death on the fourth day of his marriage. But his wife, decided to change the fate accompli by brightening up the palace in gold and silver artifacts, lighting diyas and narrating stories to her prince so he doesn’t sleep. When Lord Yama arrived to take the prince in an avatar of a serpent, he could not enter the house as it was sparkling with diyas and gold; instead he too heard the stories of princess and went away the next morning. So the princess saved her prince with pots of gold and the day came to be known as Dhanteras.
  2. Metal Fest: The modern folks can call Dhanteras a metal fest really, as all age groups indulge in buying precious metals on this day. They say gold, silver or any metal bought on Dhanteras brings you good fortune, therefore everyone buys some jewellery, big or small on Dhanteras. Better still, log on to an online store running attractive discounts on jewellery on Dhanteras and buy it pronto!
  3. Pray with Love:  Dhanteras is as important as Diwali to welcome the goddess of wealth. Decorate your home with diyas, puja thalis and floor art rangoli. Get together with family and plan your puja preparations in advance. To save time, just order all the puja accessories online and save some money and fuel!
  4. Home Sweet Home: Believe me, nothing is more satisfying than shopping for your home on Dhanteras. Did you know that people buy something as small as a katori (bowl) on Dhanteras?! Simply, because it’s considered auspicious to buy utensils made of metal (steel, silver, copper) on this day. So don’t be stingy! Loosen up your wallet and log onto an online store to get the best deals!
  5. Just follow the 4 Ways and your Dhanteras will be fabulous!: This is the fifth step, i.e. follow all or one of these 4 ways diligently and your Dhanteras will be indeed a happy one :)
